He was no longer physically able to walk the line near the end of his life, but Johnny Cash still knew how to kick up some fun with his wife, June Carter.
“They would go to Sam’s Club or Walmart and get one of those carts for handicapped people,” their daughter, singer Carlene Carter shares exclusively with ‘Closer.’ “People would be like, ‘That’s Johnny and June shopping!’ They just loved it.”

It was this kind of common-folks touch and tangible chemistry that made Johnny and June the First Couple of Country for decades. “It’s one of the great love stories of country music,” says Neil Haislop, author of ‘The Giants of Country Music.’ “They were a duo in life and in the music world, and that’s a bond that’s very hard to break.”

Even with their complicated histories — they ultimately bad seven kids between them, but only one together, son John Carter Cash — they managed to build a beautifully blended family.
“I’m part of this legacy, and carrying it on feels really good. You can’t know where you’re doing if you don’t know where you come from,” Carlene said.
